He has also given valuable advice to the Government in many matters, as for instance in connection with the Railway, not directly concerned with his office.

In view of these facts, and of the recog- -nition contained in the correspondence referred to at the beginning of this Despatch that in future a higher salary should attach to the post Mr. Chatham bas so ably filled, I desire to recommend that in appreciation of the excellent services he has rendered to this Colony a bonus of not less than £1,500 should be paid to him upon his retirement.

Mr. Chatham's salary is £1,320 per annum (87,800 @ 3. Od. - £1,170 and a Personal Allowance of £150), while the sterling salary of the post has, until the recent correspondence on the subject of its increase, reached to £1,200 plus £150 Duty Pay or £1,350.

I trust you will agree that the large

cost of the works quoted in the enclosure hereto and the other matters mentioned above, fully justify the bonus which I have suggested.

Should the war not be concluded before

the end of next year, I have no doubt that Mr. Chatham will be willing to stay on a little longer. In that case some addition
